Assuming it’s a captive bred turtle, most breeders raise them on turtle pellets (Reptomin or Nutrafin Gammarus Turtle Pellets). You can get those pellets at Petco or Petsmart. Those you can feed directly in the tank. Get yourself some small goldfish or rosies to clean up the scraps and provide a secondary food source if you forget to feed them on time (learned the hard way). I think the only time you have to feed outside the tank (in a Rubbermaid with water – they need water to swallow their food) is if you give them some live food that’s really messy or some cooked chicken or something like that… Walt G. —–Original Message—– From: nikkicoco11 [mailto:nikkicoco11@…] Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2002 10:16 AM To: diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com Subject: [diamondbackterrapins] two important questions i just got a diamondback shipped ot me. i need to know the best way to get them to eat. what to feed first and if i should move them from the tank to feed them yet, or just feed in tank even though i may have to change the water. also, what is the water temperature that is suitable for diamondbacks??? thanks To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: diamondbackterrapins-unsubscribe@egroups.com Your use of Yahoo! p.s. the water temp should be around 74-80 deg F. I’ve had mine creep up to 84 here in the summer and they’re fine. The turtles are remarkably hardy. If you have fish in there, it helps show any problems before it affects the turtles. Make sure you have good biological filtration to keep ammonia levels down. You can get and Ammonia Alert device from http://www.bigalsonline.com or http://www.drsfostersmith.com.
