I’ve had several conversations with the folks in Austin, and DBT’s are not on the protected species lists at all unless you have more than 15, and then you’d need a Non-game Colletor’s Permit. However the Game Wardens with whom I’ve spoken seem to think that they are. My suggestion would be to keep a copy of the TP&W licensing books on hand. These are free wherever they sell hunting and fishing licenses. Because of the number of species that we have, TP&W is recommending that I apply for a zoological permit. If I get it, I think that I’m going to change our name to The Turtle Ranch Reptile Zoo. lol tony

Tony; Thanks for checking and reporting back. You’re doing the best thing by thoroughly checking into the matter at all levels and that is excellent advice to obtain and have on hand copies of all applicable regulations. TP & WD’s internet pages refer to a non-game permit being required to possess 25 or more total specimens of non-game species. I haven’t seen the number 15 in any of the rules, so was just wondering where the two different numbers come from? And just out of curiousity, does Texas require legal non-profit status and/or membership in the American Zoological Association to be granted a state zoological permit? Some states have those, plus other, requirements, to be considered a zoo. Todd Tony Simmons
