Any update on dbts in Bermuda. I spoke with Scott Boykin in Tampa Bay today. I asked him for more information about the terrapins. He told me that they have been spotted nesting on several golf courses. He said that Bermuda does not have any mango groves because the waves are too large. So the terrapins are fairly scattered but there is enough to continue the species. Scott himself went out to Bermuda looking for them in the wild and did not find any. A friend of his and his professor has captured a couple and sent their blood in for testing. They are not planning on removing any of the terrapins living there. Scott also told me that there is a lab that does DNA testing to find out where terrapins originated. The cost is thirty dollar per turtle. He said that they have collected blood from several different areas to help in the comparison. I will try to find out more about this testing. I have a couple of females that I would like to get solid proof of their origins. Is this going to far in trying to keep a true subspecies alive within the pet trade? And does the average terrapin owner care where their turtle came for as long as it is good looking? Inquiring minds want to know.
