Hey everyone, I’d like to start by saying that my female DB is back to normal. Chun was right in assuming the sand to be the culprit. As far as I can tell, the sand was caught up in her scales when she was going into a shed. less than a week without it, and she’s doing all better. As for the new cage mate, I bought a cat fish to help clean up waste. The store salesman said to be careful if I was to handle it though because of “stingers” around it’s mouth. Do catfish really have stingers? I’ve never heard of it, but it’s prevented me from releasing the thing into the water. I don’t want the turtles to be stung. I’m floating the bag for the time being, until I recieve some kind of word on this. Does anyone keep catfish with their DBs? Are they safe if eaten? I’m not exactly sure what species this catfish is, but it’s white with black stripes, and still very young.
they dont have stingers.. what he is refering to are barbs… all catfish i know of have them. they will poke ya real good. let us knowhow things go. robin
Actually the fins of most catfish are the “barbs”. There are various toxins within the catfishes’ fins. It sounds like you have a rafael? sp? catfish. they are slow and nonaggressive. They will defend themselves but turtles can catch and eat them as most other fish if they want. Provide a hiding place for it. It is nocturnal and you may not ever see it out foraging. Pictus cats are more active. I have had several species of cats and not a problem with any. Scott
