what is the best water heater type for terrapins. is an underwater heater okay? or is it necessary to buy a different type? i have a spot light on the basking area, but am concerned about the water being too cold. how warm does it need to be? also, for a 2 or 3 inch terrapin, what is the appropriate water level? i have known some to keep it very shallow, and others to keep it as deep as 5 or 6 inches. thanks–Lindsay
Lindsay, I personally use EboJager submergible heaters. EboJager heaters have twice as thick glass than most other submergible heaters and they don’t get hotspots like the others do. They are a little more expansive but will last longer. I try to keep the water temperature around 78F. I buy most of my aquarium and reptile supplies from http://www.petwarehouse.com/ they have really low prices. 2 to 3 inch terrapins can live in as deep of water as you can provide for them. Only recently hatched terrapins should be kept in shallow water to prevent drowning. After a week or so I put my hatchling in ten-gallon tanks almost filled to the top with water.
