I saw water softener salt for sale at Lowe’s yesterday that says it is 99.6% pure sodium chloride. Has anyone here used this before to salt up the water for terrapins? I called the toll free # on the bag and they said that people have used this product for ponds before. This would be very convenient for me. I can buy one 80 pound bag for barely more than $5. I am going to be salting a large outdoor pond and the high cost of Instant Ocean isn’t practicle for me. The product is called “Diamond Crystal Solar Salt Extra Coarse”, it comes in a blue bag. You can see what I am talking about at http://www.cargillsalt.com thanks, Jason __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! You don’t have to make the water brackish. DBTs thrive in freshwater as well. I think trying to keep it brackish could be a real pain in the neck over time. What if it’s TOO salty? True, but I have two wild caught terrapins and they have developed some white fungus around the claws when I tried to use freshwater so I have been using salt ever since and it has cleared up. I also use a certain ratio of salt to water. I never go higher than 45 grams of salt: 1 gallon of water. And I will be putting a drinking dish with freshwater near the pond. thanks, Jason — Glaeser Walt-P55431
