This is a hard question to pose, but why are the recommended water temperatures for RES so high? I am speaking specifically about adult RES over 6 inches in length. This species exists in a lot of places where the water is much colder all year round (such as here). I am wondering if I could safely let the water cool down gradually to say 65 degrees. With a nice warm basking area would they be okay? RES exist outside here in the lakes which rarely top 70 degrees and much colder most of the year. Any ideas? J.M. I keep my RES and Paints at 72 degrees with a basking spot of 85 degrees I have had no problems, I have had them this way for about 4 years. Chris — “J.M. Moon”
Chris, Thanks! That sounds a bit more realistic. I’m getting mine down to that now. It will take a while as they are used to the 80 degrees. J.M.
