    northerns tend to have an oblong shell where the carolina terrapins are more semetric. The carolina terrapins are lighter in color usually as well. The skin patterns and coloration are of little use, both are extremely variable. Refer to a book for details, and note that there is much integration in captive and some wild groups. SCott
