One of my female northerns laid 5 eggs today. As I was undigging them I found two yolks interspersed between the eggs in the nest. Its as if she passed eggs with no shells. I have never seen this before? Could this indicate a problem? Thanks Julie

We hear of that in other species, but I haven’t heard of it in DBT’s. Then again, this is one of my learning groups, where we’re in the group just because I think they’re awesome, and I want to know more about them before we get any. ๐ Tony

Hi Julie, I once had a clutch that had two crushed eggs in it. I don’t know if it happened when the female laid the eggs or if she came back and dug down over the nest later on that day. It might sound weird but I have noticed that the females I have had for several years always nest in the same spot. And they dig a couple “test” holes before actually laying their clutch. But they also continue to dig nests and even go through the complete act of laying eggs (labor). They even act like they are droping eggs and position them and cover up the nest completly. I wouldn’t even believe that they do this if it wasn’t for the fact I have seen them do it with my own eyes! In my terrapin’s cases they dig there post nesting holes right on top of their original clutch. I have only had crushed eggs in one clutch, so I wouldn’t worry too much. I try to remove my clutches within 24 hours to avoid this from happening. Last month one of my females laid a clutch and I didn’t get out there to dig up the eggs in time and I found her going through the complete nesting cycle right over eggs she had laid the day before. I could see the eggs under her feet and she didn’t damage a single one! Congrats on your eggs and I am sorry for your damaged eggs.
