Attachments : Hi all, I have been raising 22 DBT___s for release since July of 01___. All individuals have been showing exceptional progress throughout their short life span so far. However, I recently noticed that 4 individuals have had these weird looking rashes show up on their hind legs. They begin as bloody scrapes and eventually turn into the white scabby areas (all can be seen in the attached photos). I have two tanks which house all of my turtles and the 4 affected are all from the same tank. No individuals in the other tank show any signs of this. They are kept in estuarine water with constant filtration. Most of the professors here at St. Mary___s College seem to think that the rashes are actually calluses that result from abrasions. Is it possible that the turtles are rubbing their rear ends on the substrate? The only things in their tank are artificial plants and some oyster shells. I___m concerned that this may be a bacterial infection. With a release date in July I don___t want to release wounded turtles. Thanks for the advice. Joe Chronowski jjchronowski@…

To me it looks like they’ve been harried and harassed by another turtle with nipping at the hindquarters. I’ve seen something similar in Eastern Painteds, though the skin color is slightly different (they have a base skin color of nearly black). If you can get an extended observation where they don’t notice you, you might watch for an aggressive tank mate (which would explain the absence in one tank). They certainly still don’t look wounded by comparison to wild animals I’ve caught. Looks like you’ve done a great job caring for them —-Original Message Follows—- Hi all, I have been raising 22 DBT_Ǖ__s for release since July of 01_Ǖ__.
