i can’t really see the arguement how it aids in digestion. if she eats the gravel does that mean that she is hungry and i need to feed her more? does she accidentally acknowledge the small gravel bits as food? or does she eat them purposely?i think she mistook it for food. walt gave the recommendation to buy the large river stones, but that is what i have. i was just saying that in the bag of stones, there accidentally happened to be several small ones, and bits of others in there. also, i know my terrapin can’t eat them now (the larger ones) but once she grows much bigger she might be able to. is it possible she may become impacted? i would like to still have a bedding in her environment, what should i use? i think i may follow advice and build a basking platform out of bricks and slate, but i would still like to have bedding.
jkfactorJuly 19, 2002 at 3:41 pm #17401for a basking area you can also use cork wood it works very well in my tub that i have. it floats so they will have more swimming area. — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “nikkicoco11”
Jonathan HelmsJuly 19, 2002 at 6:07 pm #17404I think my reply to your previous post will answer your question. Terrapins are almost always hungry. I don’t think that she mistook your gravel for food, as I just posted they do eat coral and crushed shells in the wild for extra calcium and other benefits. I have heard that is does also aid in digestion. I think you and your terrapin will be happy with using crushed coral as a substrate, I know mine have been. Just as a side note I know that terrapins will beg for food all day long but try to refrain from feeding her too much. If she is under three inches I would feed her ones a day but after she is over three inches I would go to every other day or every three days. Over feeding can be deadly. A rule that I use is what ever they can eat in fifteen minute should be enough food to fill them up. A terrapin will eat as much as you feed them.
