I looked at some pics I saw on the web and saw none that look like this particular one. Does anyone know what kind it is? Is it a Northern or a Carolina? http://www.amazonreptile.com/popup.php3? id=564 Thanks! Kara
Amazon implies that their latest offerings are northerns. The pic you asked about looks like a northern to me. There is natural intergrading along the east coast between the northerns and carolinas, especially in the Virginia region. It’s almost impossible to tell east coast subspecies for sure by appearance without knowing the collection locality. We have a number of past posts discussing the re-stocking of the east coast terrapins for nearly fifty years by US Fish & Game which mixed several subspecies at the breeding compound in the Carolinas and sent thousands of juveniles with mostly carolina bloodlines far north for release each year circa 1915 to 1940. We are hoping some of the DNA studies going on will tell us more about dbt subspecies today. Todd kvmadewell
Thanks! I wondered if they could breed together, but would that be a good thing or a bad thing? I think I’ll wait to see if any other adult males come available. (not that he is an adult) :o) Kara — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Todd Stockwell
