Where is the “Warm”? (CrabPot Clan Update)

On a day that seems so long ago (in July last year) I had my first personal encounter with crab pots and the damage they do to the terrapin populations in Virginia (and other places too I am sure). Some of you probably remember my panic and silly questions when I brought the damaged and hurt terrapins to NYS to be with me where they were safe. Even though I know in NYS they are not legal without all sorts of “stuff” (as in paperwork and everything from our insane DEC). Well, of the four, I did lose one to the infected foot … it just would not heal where the wire had torn a good sized piece of flesh out which naturally developed a serious fungus not long after I got her home. But, the other three …. Ah! What a wonderful blessing in my life! I just cannot get over how special and fun these little guys are here in the house. During the entire winter they ate non-stop to a point where, even after reading all about the huge amounts of food they consume compared to other turtles, I was wondering if it was healthy for them! Everything from shrimp to fish. You all suggested Mazuri and a few other turtle diets, but as you predicted, they won’t touch the stuff. So I am destined to feed them the stuff they want. But in return they provide me so much pleasure and enjoyment! The three remaining are friendly, happy, active and content. The best time of day is when the “Food God” appears and drops things form the sky! This is their favorite interactive activity. Now, while waiting for the “Warm” (spring in regular tongue, the “Warm” to the few odd ones awaiting it with such anticipation they cannot stand it), I have determined that my little nippers need to be outside for the summer in a nice big pond. I picked out a fairly deep oval 90 gallon pond for the yard with a waterfall to help circulate and maintain oxygen levels in the water for the fish (not really being looked at as fish …. being looked at as food). I have come to the conclusion that, with proper filter maintenance, I should be able to maintain a decent size school of rosy reds (small bite sized morsels) for regular snacking and then catch and feed them hearty meals outside the pond once (maybe twice) a week that they must work for. Larger fish, shell fish, etc …. Does this sound right or am I forgetting anything important??? I am building a large outdoor enclosure for them and want to make sure I do not forget anything of importance. Any of you maintaining ponds (indoors or out), I would appreciate if you would contact me …. maybe share pics of what you have built for your friends so I can get some ideas? I sure would appreciate it!!! And thanks in advance!
