White scutes!

I went to an exotic animal expo a couple of weeks ago and when I was buying my two hatchling DBTs I noticed several of them had white patches on their carapaces so I made sure to pick two without the white spots because I wasn’t sure what they were. A few days later I noticed that one of my turtles had developed a white spot, now it has two white spots, each spot covering most of the scute that it’s on. Only one turtle has them and both of them eat well twice a day I feed them zoomed aquatic turtle food and they have a basking light and a UVA/UVB light, a filter and very slightly brackish water. I’d really appreciate any help you could offer me. Thanks, Ian
Hi Ian It seems to be shell rot and it’s very common problem in DBT. Just like what Steven said before, betadine cream may help. Moreover, I believed silvirsulf or fungtopic cream can also be use in this case. If i could see a picture i would be able to help you better, but i am assuming it might be fungal or bacterial infection which is treated pretty much the same. go to the pharmacy and buy betadine solution($10.00USD) and see if you can pick up some silver sulfadiazine creme at the vet or online. it works wonders for this as it kills anything that is growing so it wont spread, its good to always have on hand too. you wont see improvements right away, but it should stop the growth of any pathogens. i would dry dock for at least a week for about an hour a day after applying the iodine , let dry 5 mins, then apply the silver, and set up in a dry unescapable tub, with a plain tee shirt(no zippers or buttons) on bottom so they can burrow to feel safe if wanted. put a heat lamp on one side and room temp on other so they can cool and warm up at will (tape the cord down onto the tub as the clamp lights do not stay well on the tubs) measure temps as you would in the tank, warm side being just under 80 . put them in a very quite location for an hour a day for about a week. what is the SG of your water? you will have to keep your water very clean as always with DBTs as they are prone to fungus/rot. hope this helps, karen
