hello again! i sure do have a lot of questions, don’t i? better safe than sorry is my theory! anyway, let me first tell you what i have in my tank as far as chemicals. i use water conditioner, sea life salt (very little), a bacteria starter, and “turtle clean (it is supposed to break down turtle waste so it is easier to filter. i have an air tube and a fluval 204 filter. i didn’t know if the sea salt would do this, or which chemical would do this. the turtle clean should sink to the bottom in order for the filter to suck it up, but this foam floats on thee top and there is a lot of it. now, i am not saying that it is over come with foam, but there is enough of it to question what it is. thanks!

You only need like 3 or 4 drops of the water conditioner per every 2 gallons of water as you mix it in a bucket, then add to the tank. You shouldn’t ever need to add water conditioner on a regular basis to the tank itself. That stuff is kind of soapy, so you may be using too much. I don’t think you need the turtle clean chemical at all. If you just move the river rock with your hand and fan the water at the bottom of the tank with your hand, it should mix it up well enough (creates a “soupy” look) for the filter to get it. Or you could vacuum the bottom every couple weeks, but that’s a pain. I found the first method to be the easiest. Again, you don’t need the salt if it’s a captive-bred. thanks for the advice, but none of it applies to me. i do not add water conditioner on a regular basis, i only add it when mixing the water for the tank. also, i don’t have river rocks, i took those out a long time ago. right now she is in a rubbermaid tub (55 gallon) with 2 plastic plants and a basking area made from bricks bulit up with slate on the top. why is it not a good idea to use the turtle clean biological cleaner? how else can the filter get rid of waste efficiently? about the salt water…as everyone has said, it is a disputed subject. the way i see it, there have been several problems with keeping these turtles in pure fresh water. i havn’t been told of ANY problems associated with the fact that there is a small amount of salt added to the tank. actually, there are many benefits to brackish water! the added salt in the water may help ward off problems such as shell rot. another thing to think about is, as i have been told, to look at nature and immitate it. diamondback terrapins are found in brackish water… — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “Glaeser Walt-P55431” http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/

About the water conditioner, the instructions on the bottle I have are closer to 32 drops per gallon, but I had to figure that out from how many teaspoons per 5 gallons the instructions say. As long as you just add the amount instructed on the bottle, that should be right. As for your foam, is there any surface agitation of the water in your tank? I seem to recall awhile back in my tank that if there was no agitation of the water surface by the filter’s output or an air pump or something else, some small amounts of that foam I think you’re referring to would start showing up. It doesn’t have to be a whole lot of agitation, just enough so the water on the surface is moving, and that might help. Jeff — Glaeser Walt-P55431 http://health.yahoo.com
