With all my terrapin tanks the water evaporates quickly in the house during the Winter months here on the east coast. The result is lots and lots of condensate on the windows in my house. The sliding glass doors seem to be the worst. Any suggestions other than add storm windows to all my windows. I seem to be getting the condensate on the windows that already have storm windows too. Also, running a dehumidifier all the time might get expensive. Robert

The only thing I can suggest is to fit the top of your tanks with a cover to trap the humid air inside. This will keep your heating costs down too since it provide a “greenhouse effect” and trap heat within the closed system of the water int the tank and the air space above the water within the greenhouse. In my garage during the winter I have heated large tanks (8′ x 3′ 2′) with only a 250 watt aquarium heater by covering the tank. Of course, you will get ALOT of condensation on the cover but better there than on the windows. To avoid the condensate from dripping on lights & heat lamps I simply provided and arched cover that allows the condensate that collects on the top cover to roll off to the sides rather than accumulating and dripping on electrical devices. This arch also allows a little extra overhead room to compensate for lights etc. Yet, I think it is not good to completely seal off the tank. (The turtles may suffocate.) But with an arched cover, the small openings on the side that are created by the arched cover should be enough for a little air circulation. A flexible sheet of aluminum works as does a peice of foam insulation board. ,Jason — dbterrapin http://mailplus.yahoo.com
