ok guys here goes, i have two very sweet, cute and happys dbt’s in their tank i have 3 gold fish and one coi (the fish are happy too) however last week i saw a lil worm in the water, i called my buddy (who also keeps turtles) and he said to get it out of the tank and put it in a lil bowl of water… so i did. he said most likely if it was internal it would die and if it was external it would live. ok, it died. however i want to treat my tank for worms, im sure the worms came from the fish but i dont want my tutrtles to get any. how do i go about treating these guys for internals and externals with out hurting the dbt’s (if the fish dies,,oh well ..however i love my dbt’s and it would crush me). my friend said he has used copper in tanks of fish but for turtles he didnt know. any of you guys ever had this problem or do you perhaps know what i can use to cure and prevent this from happening again? thank you in advance robin
greentreesAugust 12, 2001 at 7:45 pm #15337The nice thing about aquatic turtles is that most of their parasites have an aquatic stage, so by changing the water (and having chlorine in the water), eventually turtles get pretty cleared out. -Rick day wrote:
irnbru@erols.comAugust 13, 2001 at 7:23 am #15338Robin, The worm my dbt had wasn’t “lil” – it was about a foot long! 🙁 If this wets your appetite go back and read Message #506 and Message #564. My dbt’s worm was a tapeworm – it doesn’t sound like yours is a tapeworm. Eventually the vet technician taught me how to give the dbt shots to deworm the dbt. Tapeworms are hard to get rid of and booster shots every two weeks are required. Also, all dbt’s in the tank have to be treated because there are probably eggs around in the tank and filter. You need to clean the filter and the tank to get rid of any worm eggs. There may be other ways to treat the water in the tank to kill the worms and their eggs but I haven’t done that so far. Bob
